Google Gadgets work for a variety of places like Google Desktop, Google Personalized Homepage, Google Page Creator or a custom website (It's usually just some HTML/JS calling an external service). There are also converters available to transform Google Gadgets to Mac OSX Dashboard Widgets (converter, dashboard widget converter) or Windows Vista Sidebar Gadgets (converter).
